Every year since 1996, around Ascension Day a procession of musicians, acrobats and joyous people from a variety of cultures has made its way through Kreuzberg. The noisy and colourful demonstration in support of diversity, openness and tolerance moves from Hermannplatz to Möckernstraße, and forms part of a four-day street festival with around 350 stalls.
Prizes are awarded for the performances. In 2016, 73 groups with more than 5,000 performers took part in the procession.
Did you know that …
visitor numbers are probably somewhere between 600,000 and a million? The numbers only fluctuate due to the weather, because the Carnival of Cultures is the largest and most popular street festival in Berlin.
