The Reichstag building in Berlin was completed in 1894 as Parliament building. It served as a museum during the German division, because the Bundestag (Lower House of Parliament) was based in Bonn. Today the glass dome on top of the Reichstag allows a peek into the plenary hall and therefore stands as symbol for openness and democratic participation.
At the end of World War 2, the Charité (hospital in Berlin) had to move their maternity ward into the Reichstag. Therefore, some Berliners were born in the Reichstag.

once we had two German capitals? There was the seat of government of the GDR in East Berlin as well as the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn. After the reunification, Bonn was considered the new all-German capital. After a long debate, one agreed upon Berlin as the new capital.
